Yam Folk was started by us, Jack and Kim Carter (along with our two little Quay Rats and our scruffy dog Cibi - who you'll often find perched on a wall in the centre of Noss), inspired by a family connection to the River Yealm and the people, stories and traditions that surround it.

For us, the Yealm is more than just a river, it’s a way of life. It’s early mornings on the water, working on boats, muddy boots, salty air, pubs, quays, fishing, rowing and the characters who make the river what it is.

Yam Folk came from wanting to celebrate all of that and wanting to bring a little bit of the Yealm into everyday life.

Our inspiration runs pretty deep. Jack’s family has lived in the area for many generations, with family roots stretching back to the 1700s. That relationship with the water carried on throughout and in 1924, Jack’s great-grandfather started Carter Boats.

What began over a century ago became part of the family’s long standing relationship with boatbuilding, the river and the community around it.

So really, this is just our chapter of our families story. Made for river folk, boat folk, beach folk, pub folk, really anyone who just likes being near the water.

Welcome to the YAM.
